This study evaluated the ingestive behavior of Hostein calves kept in two husbandry systems: feedlot or pasture. We examined the ingestive behavior of 11 male non-castrated calves, with average initial age of 75 days, six of which were individually penned, consuming corn silage and concentrate-based diet at a ratio of 40:60 (on a DM basis), and the remainder, on pearl millet pasture (Pennisetum americanum) receiving concentrate supplementation at 1.0% body weight. Evaluations were held from November to February, from 8:00 am to 6:00 pm. Feedlot calves stay longer (p < 0.05) in idle, both in lying and standing positions, while animals on pasture spent more time in eating and ruminating activities. Confined animals performed a higher number of daily...

Feeding behavior and responses in grazing lactating cows supplemented with peanut cake R. Bras. Zootec.
Costa,Emellinne Ingrid de Sousa; Carvalho,Gleidson Giordano Pinto de; Pires,Aureliano José Vieira; Dias,Carina Anunciação dos Santos; Cerutti,Weiler Giacomazza; Oliveira,Ronaldo Lopes; Barbosa,Analívia Martins; Maranhão,Camila Maida de Albuquerque.
This experiment was conducted to study the substitution of soybean meal with peanut cake in the supplement by assessing the feeding behavior and the interaction between the thermal environment and the physiological responses of eight crossbred cows with an average live weight of 500 kg. Cows were divided into two 4 × 4 Latin squares and managed on pasture. The peanut cake was included at the levels of 0, 330, 660, and 1,000 g kg-1 in the supplement as a replacement for soybean meal. The feeding behavior variables were not affected by the levels of peanut cake. No differences were found for the physiological parameters of the animals with the replacement of soybean meal for peanut cake in the supplements. Peanut cake can replace up to 100% soybean meal in...

Ingestive behavior of Nellore cows and their straightbred or crossbred calves R. Bras. Zootec.
Vargas Junior,Fernando Miranda de; Wechsler,Francisco Stefano; Rossi,Patrícia; Oliveira,Marcus Vinicius Morais de; Schmidt,Patrick.
This trial aimed to investigate the influence of calf genetic group on the ingestive behavior of Nellore dams and their offspring on pasture. Twenty one primiparous and multiparous Nellore cows were assigned to the experiment; 13 cows nursed straightbred Nellore calves; and eight cows nursed halfbred Simmental × Nellore calves. The observations started in the morning, as soon as identification of the animals in daylight was possible, and they lasted until after sunset, when identification became impossible. The observations were made at 3, 6, 12, 24 and 30 weeks after calving. The following events were continuosly observed: grazing, rumination, idleness, water and mineral intake, and suckling frequency and length.. The dams of straightbreds showed a...

INGESTIVE BEHAVIOR OF SANTA INÊS SHEEP UNDER THERMONEUTRALITY AND THERMAL STRESS UPON CONSUMPTION OF SALINE WATER REA
Furtado,Dermeval A.; Carvalho Júnior,Sebastião B. de; Souza,Bonifácio B. de; Dantas,Nayanne L. B.; Rodrigues,Ladyanne R..
ABSTRACT The consumption of saline water in semiarid regions is a recurrent situation that can affect the ingestive behavior of small ruminants. This study evaluated the ingestive behavior of Santa Inês sheep maintained in a climatic chamber under two air temperatures -25 °C within the thermal comfort zone (TCZ) and 32 °C above the TCZ - and consuming water with three levels of salinity - 2.0, 4.0, and 8.0 dS m-1. The experimental design was completely randomized in 2 × 3 factorial schemes, comprising two air temperatures and drinking water with three levels of salinity, in six replicates (animals). Regardless of air temperature, the consumption of saline water did not affect feed and water intake by the sheep; however, there was a decrease in feed intake...

Ingestive behavior of steers on pastures of Brachiaria brizantha and Cynodon dactylon Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Zanine,Anderson de M; Vieira,Bruno R; Ferreira,Daniele de J; Vieira,Antônio J. M; Silveira,Márcia C. T. da; Siva,Wilton L. da; Cecon,Paulo R.
An experiment was carried out to assess the performance of steers on Brachiaria brizantha and Cynodon dactylon cv. Coast cross pastures by the continuous stocking method with a variable stocking rate. A completely randomized experimental design was used with two pastures representing the treatments, each containing 10 replicates. The results of t-tests demonstrated that the steers grazed for less time (7:19 h) on the B. brizantha grass pasture than the on Coast-cross grass pasture (8:13 h). There was no difference in rumination time from 6:46 and 6:89 h for the B. brizantha and Coast-cross pastures, respectively. There was a significant difference for the values regarding the time that the steers remained idle, and the animals were more frequently idle on...

Sources of carbohydrates in the ingestive behavior of feedlot steers R. Bras. Zootec.
Silva,Viviane Santos da; Alves Filho,Dari Celestino; Freitas,Leandro da Silva; Brondani,Ivan Luiz; Restle,João; Azevedo Junior,Ricardo Lima de; Teixeira,Odilene de Souza; Borchate,Daniele.
In this article we research the influence of different sources of carbohydrates (corn, soybean hulls or wheat bran) upon the digestive behavior of 24 confined castrated steers with an initial average age and weight of 20 months and 330 kg born from the cross between Charolais and Nellore. The diet was composed of 40% sorghum silage and 60% concentrate. The time spent on total ruminating (an average of 454.6 min/day) was not influenced by the source of carbohydrate. The animals from the wheat bran treatment spent less time idle (718 min) in relation to those on the corn and soybean hulls treatments, which did not differ between themselves (an average of 792 min/day). The steers from the wheat bran treatment remained less time feeding (184 min/day) compared...
